William Glegg, a late 17th century resident of Gayton Hall, was knighted for the hospitality that he afforded William of Orange in at his impressive manor residence. Two evergreen oaks called William and Mary, which still stand today, were planted on the grounds of the property to commemorate his visit. Gayton Hall, a handsome Grade II-listed manor house with views toward the Dee estuary and across the Welsh Hills, was the main residence of the Gleggs, one of the most important families in Wirral from the late Middle Ages until the 19th century. The country home is believed to have been constructed during the mid 17th century, according to the listing agent, Pauline Kay. The house is surrounded by landscaped gardens and ponds, with outdoor terraces overlooking these lush grounds. Kay describes the gardens as "magical, with fabulous views.
